Colonel Sebastian Moran is the right-hand man of Professor Moriarty and labelled by Holmes as “the second most dangerous man in London”. He is an accomplished marksman, a reputation gained while serving with distinction in the British army in the Second Afghan War (though he does not meet Watson) and while hunting tigers in India. Holmes and Watson initially admire Moran for his many stories of iron nerve … until they become the game he is hunting at Moriarty’s behest.
Colonel Sebastian Moran even appears in two of George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman stories.
In the Basil Rathbone movie Terror by Night Moran is the principal villain.
Moran is one of the best shots in the world. He was baited into shooting an illuminated wax bust of Holmes.
